Powicana Vineyard sits above Mendocino Lake. The rich red color of the clay soil and a gentle breeze from the lake cools the vineyard on the hottest days. It was named it Powicana in honor of the people who lived on that land, the Pomo word for Red Clay Ridge. The farmers believe the soil is the living substrate that finds its final expression in the wine. They found inspiration from Masanobu Fukuoka, natural agriculture, and the biodynamic philosophy and practices. They converted the vineyard to no-till, no spray and are dry-farming.
The fruit aromatics are powerful and beautiful, but the wine clearly needed time. The combination of perfect chemistry and the tannin profile allowed this wine to be aged an additional year in barrel. No ingredients went into this wine other than grapes. Natural. Pure.
Tasting Notes: Dark Black Currant, Macerated Blueberry, Bright Violet, Tar, with a gripping tannin profile that supports the intensity of fruit.
